The lively annual celebration of acclaimed author and Savannah native Flannery O'Connor's birthday will offer free family fun, live music, a wacky parade, birthday cake, and more!
A portion of beautiful Lafayette Square will be dedicated to the annual Savannah Local Author Day, sponsored by The Book Lady Bookstore. Local and regional authors will be on hand and you are invited to stroll around the book tables and meet some wonderful poets, children’s book authors, and both fiction & nonfiction writers.
As always chicken-poop bingo (really!) will be a highlight for the kiddos & adults alike. You'll also be welcomed to visit the Flannery O'Connor museum, located at 207 E. Charlton Street right on Lafayette Square, to view Flannery's Depression-era childhood home. Take this opportunity to shop the Home's expanded Flannery swag shop and learn more about Savannah’s most famous local author.
Live music throughout the event will be provided by a cavalcade of singer-songwriters and musicians from some of Savannah's finest local bands.
The parade will start winding around Lafayette Square at 3 p.m. Attendees are invited to walk in the parade, bring handmade signs and sing along. Music for the parade will be played by an all-star line up of the Sweet Thunder Strolling Band.
Costumes inspired by Flannery O'Connor characters, settings or the author’s life are optional, but definitely encouraged! The parade is free and open to the public.
More about the location:
Lafayette Square is directly between St. John the Baptist Cathedral and the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home on Abercorn Street between East Charlton and East Harris Streets.
